De Havilland Rapide Special

Details

The De Havilland Rapide Special was built by Warren Bonning in Melbourne in 1997. It was inspired by the creations of Thompson & Taylor from Brooklands who built a succession of land speed record vehicles that were mainly equipped with huge aero engines. This car was built with 10 litre De Havilland aero engine from a Gypsy Queen on a custom built chassis with early Holden suspension. It has a De Dion rear end with a Ford Top Loader gearbox.

The was acquired by its current owner in 2002 and it has been shown and used at events such as Speed on Tweed, Willowbank and other historic race meets. The car was invited to complete a demonstration lap at the 2000 Australian Grand Prix.
