1977 Morgan 4/4

Details

This lovely original Australian delivered factory right hand drive Morgan 4/4 has just arrived at Oldtimer Australia.

Morgan is one of the most unique and iconic motoring brands of all time.  This British family owned company was founded in 1910 by Henry Frederick Stanley Morgan and he ran the company until he passed way in 1959, aged 77. His son Peter Morgan took over the reins of the company until he passed away in 2003.

The first Morgans were three wheelers and it wasn’t until 1936 that Morgan introduced its first four wheel “car”, the 4/4, for four seats and four wheels. The three wheelers were phased out in 1952 by which time Morgan had introduced a bigger engined, high performance car designated Plus 4 to be produced alongside the 4/4. Subsequently Morgan introduced the Plus 4 Plus and whilst each of their models continued to evolve, during the late fifties and early to mid-sixties Morgan was seen to be “stale and producing more of the same” and many pundits thought the brand was indeed “dated and may fade away”. Peter Morgan had other ideas and in 1968 he introduced the Plus 8.

Arguably the most popular and certainly the most practical of the Morgan range has always been the 4/4. Its longevity is quite astounding and the most popular and sought after variant was the 4/4 1600 that was built between 1968 and 1993 during which time 5448 cars were built.

We are delighted to offer an incredibly original Australian delivered 1977 Morgan Plus 4/4 1600 4 seater. This car has the Ford Crossflow 1600cc engine mated to a four speed gearbox.

The car was sold new by Calder Sports Cars in Melbourne, Australia and its factory supplied ‘Chassis Record’ confirms the car as matching numbers (chassis number B3994, engine number 6M15-A2389) and it is today presented in its original and absolutely fabulous colour scheme of ‘Royal Ivory’ with red leather upholstery. The car was supplied new with the following options: read leather upholstery, red wire wheels, strengthened frame front, reclining and folding seats, head rests, 3 windscreen wipers, 2 washers jets, reversing lights, locking petrol cap, locking door handles, door mirror, tonneau and under seal.

The current owner acquired the car back in 2005 at which time the odometer read 21,419km. Some 9 years later the odometer reads 35,397km. Its previous owner was a Mr Philip Willis from NSW who acquired the car in at least 1996, but possibly earlier. As at 12th February 1996 the odometer read 06058 km. Its prior history is not known.

Today the car presents as a well cared for and incredibly original example of the marque. The car looks to have all original paint & trim and whilst the paint is showing some signs of cracking in places and the leather some patina, the car just has a wonderful presence about it. It could be described as “just like your favourite leather jacket”. It’s nicely worn in, but you would wear it anywhere! The only damage to the leather is on the top of the driver’s door which is visible in the photographs. The car is structurally excellent, the engine bay is clean & tidy and the soft top is in very good condition.

Whilst the car looks fabulous the real fun starts when you get behind the wheel. Turn the key and the 1600cc engine soon barks into life. Once warm and you are on the road it is an absolute joy to drive. The steering is true, the gear change slick and the car performs as it should.

The car has been recently serviced and it needs nothing than a new owner to use it and enjoy it!
