1961 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 3.8 Litre “flat floor” Roadster

Details

The Jaguar E-Type is arguably the greatest sports car ever built. It was announced at the March 1961 Geneva Motorshow and it took the motoring world by storm . . . the car was an absolute sensation!  The body styling was simply gorgeous and technologically the E-Type was an engineering masterpiece and it set new standards in all areas.

Whilst automotive styling is somewhat subjective the E-Type is often ranked atop lists of ‘the most beautiful cars’ and in fact it has been described by Enzo Ferrari as ‘the most beautiful car ever made’. And it’s not just about the looks as the E-Type is often at the top of other lists such as ‘The best sports car ever built’ or ‘The most significant cars’. It is truly a motoring icon.

As a testament to the success of the E-Type, production evolved through three series from 1961 until 1974 during which time circa 70,000 cars were built.

Oldtimer Australia is delighted to offer a very rare 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 3.8 Litre “flat floor” Roadster.

This particular car is chassis number 876443 with engine number R31799.

The Jaguar Heritage Certificate confirms this factory LHD example was manufactured on the 27th December 1961 with a date of dispatch of 12th January 1962. The original distributor is noted as Jaguar Cars, New York, USA. The car’s original colour scheme was opalescent bronze with a beige interior and fawn soft top. The first owner is noted as Mr PA Barchas.

Accompanying this car is an original California title which has an issue date of 26th April 1965 in the name of Paul O Barchus from San Diego California. The car is noted as being registered as KSG 933. Barchus owned the car for 30 years. The date of transfer on the back of the title is 25th April 1996. The car looks to have been sold through a dealer to its second owner from Frankston, Victoria in Australia. The import approval on file is date 13th November 1996.

As soon as the car arrived into Australia it was converted to RHD and the seats were re-trimmed. The car had a new soft top fitted in 1998. As a nice touch the car was registered in Victoria as KSG 933. The owner subsequently moved to Queensland and the car was registered as KSG 93.

This Jaguar E-Type is 56 years old an incredibly it has had only two private owners from new. The car has obviously been well cared for its entire life as it is in excellent original condition. It’s hard to find them like this!

The paintwork has a high gloss and is generally very good. The car looks to have had a repaint at some stage in its original colour of opalescent bronze. The only noteworthy blemishes are stone chips under the front of the car. Structurally the car looks to be very good. There is no rust evident in the body and the car looks very clean and solid underneath. The panel gaps are excellent and all of the exterior trim and lenses are in good condition. The wire wheels are also very good and the car is sitting on Yokohama 215 x 15 tyres.

The interior is in very good condition and very well preserved. Apart from a re-trim it is likely that everything is original. There are no rips or tears in the upholstery and everything looks to be correct and in working order. The two exceptions are the steering wheel and the carpet. The steering wheel looks to be original to the car and there is a split in the timber that should be repaired As you will see in the photographs the floor carpets are showing signs of wear, but still very serviceable. The condition of the soft top is very good, consistent with the rest of the car.

The car starts easily and the engine settles into a smooth idle. Once warm back off the choke and the car is off and running. In summary it drives well and does everything one would expect out on the open road. It’s tight on the road with no significant rattles or squeaks, the Moss box is tight & car shifts easily through the gears and the car is nimble, light & very responsive.

The car has just had the following work completed: a new clutch fitted, oil leaks repaired, all of the fluids changed, a new battery fitted and other miscellaneous repairs.
